Open Heart, a documentary about EMERGENCY, an organization that provides life support for civilian victims of war and poverty, has been nominated for an Academy Award in the Documentary Short category. Directed by Kief Davidson, Open Heart documents the work of EMERGENCY and follows eight Rwandan children, who leave their families behind and embark on a journey to receive high-risk open-heart surgery in Africa’s only free of charge, state of the art cardiac surgery hospital, The Salam Centre.
“When we, at EMERGENCY, learned about the nomination for the film Open Heart, by Kief Davidson, we were really proud; the nomination was also for our Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery, opened by EMERGENCY in Sudan in 2007. The Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery is featured in the film. The nomination is also for the kind of medicine EMERGENCY has been practicing since 1994; free of charge and high quality healthcare should be a right recognized for every human being, a fundamental human right,” says Dr. Gino Strada, founding member of EMERGENCY.
EMERGENCY was founded in 1994 – a global non-profit organization that provides medical/surgical assistance to victims of war, landmines and poverty. They currently work in six countries, building hospitals, surgical centers, rehabilitation centers, pediatric clinics, first aid posts and cardiac surgery centers, like The Salam Centre, featured in Open Heart. Over 5 million people have received free, high quality health care through EMERGENCY; one-third of these people are children.
Sanrio, parent company of global icon Hello Kitty®, began working with EMERGENCY in 2012. The partnership continues to grow, with a collaboration planned for distribution in 2013. In addition, Hello Kitty products are donated to EMERGENCY hospitals & centers around the world; to be distributed to patients of all ages.
